The Seymour girls capped a 26-1 season by defeating East Haven 2-0 in the CIAC Class M softball final on Saturday to claim the school's ninth state title in the sport.

Mike Chiovitti drove home the winning win in the semifinals and added a late-inning RBI in the final as Holy Cross topped Seymour to capture the 2014 NVL baseball championship.

Peak Performances

For the period of June 1-14, the following NVL athletes were among the star performers in CIAC action:

* Oscar Medina (Crosby boys’ track) took first place in two individual events — the 100- and 200-meter sprints — at the CIAC Class L championship meet at Middletown High.

* Katie Petroski (Seymour girls’ softball) stroked three hits — including a home run — in the Wildcats’ CIAC win over Suffield, and then scored two runs in each of the semis and the final to help lead her team to the state Class M title.

* Preston Shortell (Holy Cross boys’ golf) fired an even-par 72 at Tallwood Country Club to take medalist honors at the CIAC Division III tournament on Monday.

* Meg Perrin (Watertown girls’ track) took first place in the javelin at the CIAC Class M meet and at the State Open competition, and also topped the field at the New England Track & Field Championships, to cap an impressive senior season.

* Nick Kuzia (Seymour boys’ baseball) contributed four hits and two RBI in the Wildcats’ first-round win, and then tossed a three-hit shutout and scored the game’s lone run in a 1-0 defeat of Oxford to lead his team to the quarterfinals of the Class S tourney.
