Woodland's Kyle Beynor capitalized on some attacking opportunities against Naugatuck's Julian Milek to successfully defend his NVL boys' tennis title.
Torrington Takes Title
Sydney Matzko and the Red Raiders defeated defending champion Seymour, 3-1, to claim the 2013 NVL softball tournament championship on Wednesday.
On The Run
Woodland's athletes raced past their league rivals to claim the top spot in both the boys' and girls' Naugatuck Valley League championship track meets.

For the week of May 27-June 1 (the last full week of spring sports competition), the following NVL athletes were among the star performers in league action:
* Nick LaPerriere (Woodland boys' track) took first place in the 400 meters and was part of the Hawks' winning 4x100 relay at the CIAC Class M championship meet in New Britain, where Woodland finished second in the team standings.
* Nina Kosciuszek (Naugatuck girls' softball) struck out ten batters while pitching the distance in the Greyhounds' 4-1 win over Hall in the first round of the Class LL tournament.
* Jay Hogan (Holy Cross boys' golf) carded a one-over 72 at Watertown Golf Club to earn medalist honors and help lead the Crusaders to the team title at the NVL tournament.
* Meg Perrin (Watertown girls' track) earned gold in the javelin with a winning throw of 134 feet, 2 inches (beating the second-place effort by 13 feet) at Wednesday's Class MM championship meet in Middletown.
* Matt Cammett (Holy Cross boys' baseball) collected three hits in a 6-5 victory over Bacon Academy and went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple in the Crusaders' 5-2 defeat of Sheehan in the Class M quarterfinals.
